Pruning is one of the most necessary garden tasks. A true guarantee that our plants, shrubs, or trees will grow properly and be healthy. A work that we have to perform twice a year fundamentally, autumn and early spring, and for which it is necessary to use specific pruning tools according to each type of plant. Something that raises many doubts and that is worth knowing to do correctly.
And we say this because this work is one of the most committed in the garden. A strong reason for us to choose the pruning tools correctly, knowing them a little more, and knowing which one is right for each plant.
Pruning is still inflicting a wound to the plant, a cut. Something that has to be done by minimizing the chances of causing damage that can suppose, especially in autumn, a focus of fungal infections, for example.
For this reason, it is important to know the different pruning tools and what each one is for. The best way to know what we need to have and, above all, which one to apply to each type of plant in our little piece of nature.
5 PRUNING TOOLS NEEDED AND ITS USEFULNESS
Sometimes, when we have to choose pruning tools, we choose to do so without stopping to look at exactly what their uses are. Something that is essential, since not choosing a larger pruning tool will be more complete. To do it correctly, we have to take into account different factors starting with the type of branch to be cut, the height of the plant, or its characteristics.
One of the fundamental things is the type of sheet. In this aspect, we will find two formats:
- Those of slide cut with a cutting blade and support other makes. These pruning tools, for making a clean-cut, are ideal for green branches
- The anvil, which has a sheet with this shape that gives them a name. The ideal cut for woods that oppose more resistance or are dead
Defined the types of blade, we must know that another factor to choose our pruning tools is the type of stem or branch that we are going to cut.
1. Hand pruning shears
The most common pruning tool, especially if they use that we are going to give it, is intended for small or medium-sized plants and with little woody branches, such as young shrubs. Light and easy to use, we can opt for the hand pruning scissors of any of the two types of blades we have commented on. We can use it as long as what we have to cut has a maximum of 2.5 centimeters.
If our intention is to have scissors that make delicate cuts or to prune little accessible places, the ideal will be to choose one of the narrow leaves. Thanks to this, we can make a cleaner cut and minimize any damage to the plant.
2. Pruning shears with two hands
We emphasize not harming the plant… but neither can we harm ourselves! So if we have to prune shrubs or trees of good size and with branches between 4 and 6 centimeters, the ideal is to use two-handed pruning shears.
One of the main advantages of this type of scissors is that, by having two handles, we can make strength more easily and without resentment for it. One way to optimize the force we use to prune, making this task a comfortable and comfortable one. For this, it is also important to choose pruning shears that have an ergonomic handle to make our work even easier.
3. Scissors hedge trimmer
The pruning shears needed to shape and clean big hedges and shrubs. Without them, the growth of the plant will be out of control and will distort its original appearance.
In this type of scissors, it is important to choose the type of cutting off the edge, and this decision will not be taken by us, but the type of shrub or hedge we have: if it is thin or green branches, the ideal thing is a straight-edged scissors; if we are facing a woody or thicker type plant, those with straight edges will be the answer.
We can also opt for a mechanized hedge trimmer if, for example, we need to prune a good number of them, as is the case with a natural garden closure.
4. Pole scissors
The answer for high hedges. Despite its size, we will always have to use a ladder to be able to prune conveniently and without damaging the plant. Although there are two types of pole scissors, fixed or extensible handle, and its main difference is not so much in this but, rather, in its usefulness: those of fixed handle will allow us to prune up to 2 meters high, while the extensible ones They even reach 5 meters.
To be able to use them correctly, we will only have to adapt the length of the scissors to the height of the cut.
5. Hand ax
The necessary pruning tool if we have to prune trees with branches of good size. Those that are already authentic wood and that if you don’t use a hand ax, they will be impossible to prune in any other way.
If we have to use an ax, it is important that we weigh a lot that will be decisive in its subsequent use: the weight of the tool.
